What is Non-Toxic, EcoFriendly Dry Cleaning

Most dry cleaners use harmful chemicals to clean your clothes. In fact, Occidental College’s Pollution Prevention Center found that 85 percent of dry cleaners in the United States use perchloroethylene (or perc, for short) as a solvent in the dry cleaning process. This VOC poses a threat to humans and the environment and has become a recognized carcinogen by California’s Proposition 65. Perchloroethylene enters the body primarily through skin contact exposure and inhalation. These chemicals pose a threat to employees at dry cleaning shops, customers and local ecosystems. The dangers of perc are real and alarming, but there are alternatives! Just because you don’t want to be exposed to carcinogenic chemicals doesn’t mean you have to deal with soiled and wrinkly clothes.

Types of Non-Toxic Dry Cleaning

Professional Wet Cleaning

Wet cleaning is a way to care for “Dry Clean” clothes in a safe, energy-efficient way that uses water as a solvent rather than chemicals. This method, though it uses water, spins the clothes slowly enough not to aggravate the fabrics in a way that a traditional washer would. They are monitored by machines that can be programmed to measure the specific variables of time, temperature, and movement. Studies have found that nearly every item labeled “dry clean only” can be wet cleaned without any damage.

Liquid CO2 Cleaning

Liquid CO2 cleaning is a method by which cleaners use recycled CO2 from factories in a pressure chamber. The air is removed from the chamber, and the CO2 is injected into the chamber, followed by liquid CO2, which dissolves fats, oils and dirt. The process is slightly less effective in removing oil-based stains, but is much more environmentally friendly
